The service isn't designed to minimise all data collection but it's privacy policy doesn't mention any commercial reuse but says data may be used in an anonymised format for "research and other purposes". It's a not-for-profit organisation, meaning it's not selling any data about you. OpenStreetMap is an open-source mapping service that's updated by volunteers using satellite imagery and GPS. And to power all these features, Google needs to collect a lot of data from you.īut there are other options. Sure, Google Maps can do a lot: it can predict traffic routes, recommend places nearby that you may be interested in and share your location with friends. This will pause your location activity and stop Google from saving where you go "even when you aren't using a specific Google service". When you perform a search, access Google Maps, or get the weather, either manually or automatically through a smartphone widget, Google will still log your location. When you turn off location history, Google stops automatically recording your location for features such as the Maps timeline, but it warns you that “some location data may be saved as part of your activity on other Google services, like Search and Maps”.
